Common Use
Imiquimod is a topical immune response modifier used to treat skin conditions such as external genital and perianal warts, actinic keratosis (a precancerous skin condition), and superficial basal cell carcinoma (a type of skin cancer). It works by stimulating the body’s immune system to attack abnormal skin cells or viral infections.

Dosage and Direction
Imiquimod is applied as a thin layer directly on the affected skin, usually two to five times per week depending on the condition being treated. It should be applied at bedtime and washed off after 6–10 hours. Hands should be washed before and after application, and contact with healthy skin should be minimized.

Precautions
Tell your doctor if you have autoimmune diseases, weakened immune function, or are using other skin treatments. Avoid exposure to sunlight or tanning beds during use, as the skin may become more sensitive. Do not apply on broken, sunburned, or inflamed skin unless instructed by your doctor.

Contraindications
Do not use imiquimod if you are allergic to it or any of its components. It is not recommended for use on open wounds or mucous membranes. Use during pregnancy and breastfeeding should be discussed with a healthcare provider.

Possible Side Effects
Common side effects include redness, swelling, itching, burning, and scabbing at the application site. These are usually mild to moderate and temporary. Rare but serious effects include skin ulceration, flu-like symptoms, or signs of a severe allergic reaction.

Drug Interaction
Topical imiquimod has minimal systemic absorption, but caution should be used when combining it with other skin medications or treatments that affect immune function. Always inform your doctor about any topical or systemic drugs you are using.

Missed Dose
If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next scheduled application, skip the missed dose. Do not apply extra cream to compensate.

Overdose
Overuse may lead to severe local skin reactions such as blistering or ulceration. Accidental ingestion or excessive application requires medical attention. Treatment is usually symptomatic.

Storage
Store imiquimod at room temperature away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children and dispose of single-use packets properly after use.
