Common use

CellCept medication is used to suppress the immune system of the organism after transplantation of inner organs. Immune system can sometimes reject a transplanted organ (for example a kidney, liver or heart transplant) because organism treats it as a strange object. Mycofenolate mofetil as the main active substance helps to save a transplant. CellCept tablets are usually swallowed with cyclosporine and steroid drugs.

Dosage and direction

CellCept tablets must be used in a particular amount for a definite period recommended by your doctor. Oral pills are taken on an empty stomach (usually 1 hour before meals). If you have eaten something, wait for 2 hours and take your prescribed portion after that. It is very important to swallow the whole pill. It must not be crashed or broken. If the substance gets in your eyes, nose, mouth or skin, wash them with clean water.

Precautions

CellCept pills can harm an unborn child or cause other serious birth problems. Your doctor should always know whether you are pregnant or not. Escape all contacts with ill persons during the period of therapy. It is much easier to catch cold or other infection when you use the medication. Your blood must be checked on a weekly basis during the whole period of treatment.

Contraindications

Allergy to mycophenolate mofetil or other components forbid taking the drug. CellCept is contraindicated when you have a chronic stomach ulcer or other disorders of the stomach or intestines, a kidney disease, a bacterial, viral or fungal infection, Kelley-Seegmiller and Lesch-Nyhan syndrome. Pregnancy is considered to be a strict contraindication.

Possible side effect

Allergic reaction is the common side effect of CellCept therapy. This medication can evoke a number of other negative influences which include: fever, unusual chills, pain in the body, general flu symptoms, noticeably pale skin, bruising or severe bleeding, strange weakness, troubles with breath, fast heartbeats, black stools, coughing with blood, difficulties in urination, pain in chest or back, vision problems, weakness in legs, strange lack of coordination, usual nausea, constant vomiting, stomach ache, diarrhoea (sometimes constipation), headache, swelling in hands or feet, incomprehensible anxiety and problems with sleep. Any side effect must be a reason for further doctor’s consultation.

Drug interaction

It is worth mentioning that sevelamer (Renagel, Renvela) should be taken at 2 hours after a patient takes CellCept. Ask your doctor's advice if you are supposed to take azathioprine, antibiotics, cholestyramine, amoxicillin, metronidazole, rifampin or sulfa drugs, norfloxacin, acyclovir, valacyclovir, ganciclovir, valganciclovir or stomach medicines such as esomeprazole, dexlansoprazole, lansoprazole, pantoprazole, omeprazole and rabeprazole.

Missed dose

Skip a portion if you have missed it. Do not take a doubled dose to catch up. It will be better to stick to a particular schedule and take the pills in time. Extra doses can evoke overdose symptoms.

Overdose

Overdose is characterised by severe side effects which are listed in this guide. Find emergency medical service or refer to your general practitioner for help if you suspect overdose.

Storage

CellCept must be stored at average room temperature far away from direct moisture, heat and constant sunlight. Bear substance can be rather dangerous for the skin, eyes, mouth and nose. Do not let children get the pills.
