Common use

Tobradex is a combination eye medication used to treat inflammatory eye conditions associated with bacterial infections. It contains Tobramycin, a broad-spectrum antibiotic that targets susceptible bacteria, and Dexamethasone, a corticosteroid that reduces inflammation and swelling. Together, they help relieve redness, pain, and irritation while addressing the underlying infection. Tobradex is commonly used after eye surgeries or for acute eye inflammations.

Dosage and direction

Tobradex is typically instilled as one or two drops into the affected eye(s) every 4 to 6 hours, as prescribed by your ophthalmologist. Shake the bottle well before use and avoid letting the dropper tip touch your eye or any surface to prevent contamination. If using other eye medications, wait at least 5–10 minutes between applications. Always follow the exact dosage and schedule provided by your doctor.

Precautions

Before using Tobradex, inform your doctor if you have glaucoma, cataracts, or a history of eye infections like herpes simplex. Long-term use may increase intraocular pressure or risk of secondary infections. Do not wear contact lenses during treatment unless your doctor says it’s safe. Wash your hands before and after use to avoid spreading germs.

Contraindications

Tobradex should not be used in patients with viral or fungal eye infections, or in those who have known hypersensitivity to tobramycin, dexamethasone, or other components of the formulation. It is also contraindicated in untreated purulent eye infections, as corticosteroids can worsen them. Avoid use in individuals with corneal or conjunctival epithelial damage unless prescribed. Always consult your doctor before starting the medication.

Possible side effect

Common side effects may include temporary eye irritation, redness, blurred vision, or itching. Less commonly, it may cause increased eye pressure, eye pain, or secondary infections with prolonged use. Rare but serious effects include vision changes or allergic reactions. Inform your doctor if symptoms persist or worsen.

Drug interaction

Tobradex may interact with other eye drops or ointments, especially those containing steroids or antibiotics. Let your healthcare provider know about all topical or systemic medications you are using. Do not combine with other eye products without medical guidance. Using multiple medications at once may increase the risk of side effects.

Missed dose

If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember. If it’s nearly time for the next dose, skip the missed one and return to your regular schedule. Do not double up to make up for a missed dose. Consistent application is important for effective treatment.

Overdose

An overdose from Tobradex eye drops is unlikely, but overuse can lead to increased eye irritation or pressure. If accidentally ingested or if an overdose is suspected, seek medical help immediately. Never apply more than prescribed. Keep all medications out of reach of children.

Storage

Store Tobradex at room temperature (15–25°C / 59–77°F). Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use and protect it from light and moisture. Do not freeze. Discard the product 4 weeks after opening or as instructed on the packaging.
